Success in the game of poker has been shrouded in myths like many casino games have. Here are four of the most popular myths which have done most damage on the bankroll of players especially the beginners:

(1) You've got to advertise. This means that you need to bluff so that your good hands will provide the money. Bluff is designed to raise the pot. There is the likelihood that it will not work, but the odd of success is still reasonable. Minimal bluffing is enough to provide the result on your good hands. Advertising is only a result of bluffing, not the real purpose.

(2) Confidence is very important for a player. Confidence results from success. You don't fill yourself with confidence and then succeed in poker rather confidence is born out of success.

(3) The best players are all super-aggressive. This is false. Only a handful of successful players are super-aggressive. They perform better in tournament plays but not in money play.

Furthermore, while this may work, this may not create a connection to an ordinary player like you or me. Extricating yourself from a trying situation in poker requires that you be a master of the game of poker. Don't be an idiot, but don't push your luck as hard throughout the game either.

(4) You must pay to learn. As it goes, you need to invest a few thousand dollars in order to learn how to break even at the end of the game. While the cliché may be applicable if you want to immediately play the high limit games, it seems unlikely to low limit games which is where most novices start. Undisciplined players abound in cheap games of poker. The art of breaking even can be learned in most poker books using only good hands. Protecting your good beginning hands is sufficient enough for a player to prolong his stint in lower limit games even without knowledge of the fine points of poker.

The four myths mentioned above give confidence to poker players to gamble on more money than their usual. A player who adopted the myths would raise individual pots in a high-limit game. In the end, the risk is greater. They only tend to mislead the players into putting more money in the pot and in the end lose more money than any other player in the game. The best solution in success is playing your cards right and approaching the game with caution.
